TRM CC-9
Data Sheet

TRM-CC is a liquid hydrocarbon sensor that responds to refined fuels (e.g. diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, naphtha) and to crude oil and natural gas condensates. TRM-CC will not respond to rain water, water condensation, snow-melt, salt water or other naturally occurring surface water.

TRM-CC is designed to be installed in a vertical orientation. A thin layer (<2mm) of fuel or oil will trigger the sensor. The layer of fuel may be spreading across a dry floor or floating on collected storm water. TRM-CC has no floats or moving parts. The entire vertical run of the sensor will detect hydrocarbons with the exception of the jumper cable connection area at the top of the device.

TRM-CC is available in a 9“, 35” and 59” versions.  All versions are supplied with a perforated, 2” diameter, stainless steel protective screen.    These sensors are robust and resistant to mechanical damage that might occur in an unprotected outdoor containment.  TRM-CC is supplied with 5m (16 ft) of tray rated, outdoor, two wire leader cable (longer lengths can be supplied on request).

The recommended monitoring option for TRM-CC is TRM-Easy5-Relay-U or TRM-Easy5-Panel.   The TRM-Easy5-Relay or -Panel have the capacity to monitor two of the TRM-CC probes.   There is a “LEAK” relay and a “TROUBLE” relay for each probe (a total of four output contacts).   The DIN rail mounted TRM-Easy5-Relay is UL/CSA/CE approved and is available in 12 Vdc or 24 Vdc voltage options.   The TRM-Easy5-Panel is a 12″ x 12″ x 4″ UL508A certified control panel ready to mount on any indoor wall.

CSA Group has examined TRM-CC and considers the sensor to be “Simple Apparatus” per  CSA /EN/IEC/UL 60079-11 Clauses 5.7 a and b. As such TRM-CC may be installed in hazardous areas.  For C1D2 areas, the TRM-CC can be connected directly to the TRM-Easy5-Relay or Panel without additional barriers. For installation in C1D1 or Zone 0 an addition zener safety barrier is required.

Key Features

Form Factor:

  • Vertical tube style probe.

Dimensions:

  • TRM-CC-9: 2” diameter x  9” perforated stainless steel sleeve, with 1” x 4” pipe nipple at top (13” overall height)
  • TRM-CC-35: 2” diameter x  35” perforated stainless steel sleeve, with 1” x 4” pipe nipple at top (39” overall height)
  • TRM-CC-59: 2” diameter x  59” perforated stainless steel sleeve, with 1” x 4” pipe nipple at top (63” overall height)

Leader/Jumper cable:

  • Supplied with factory standard 5m (16 feet) of two wire leader cable. (longer leader cable can be quoted on request)  Leader cable can be spliced to extended length jumper cable in the field.  The maximum recommended jumper cable per TRM-CC probe is 2500 feet as limited by zener safety barrier inductance and capacitance parameters)

Integrity Monitoring:

  • TRM-Easy5-Relay or -Panel has a TROUBLE output relay that indicates loss of power or damaged / broken wiring between the Relay Unit and the TRM-CC probe.

Response time:

  • Diesel, Gasoline, Jet Fuel: < 3 seconds
  • Natural Gas Condensates:   < 3 seconds
  • Crude Oil, API 38: less than 3 seconds @ 70°F
  • Crude Oil, API 28: less than 3 seconds @ 70°F
  • Crude Oil, API 13: average 40 seconds at 112°F

Resettable:

  • Sensor can be reset in the field using naphtha as a diluting solvent and air drying

Reset time:

  • Varies by fuel type, ambient temperature and air flow.  Light fuels will require one or two naphtha / air dry cycles (about 4 hours). Crude oil may take several naphtha /drying cycles depending on viscosity.

Simple Apparatus Statement:

  • CSA Group has examined TRM-CC and considers the sensor to be “Simple Apparatus” per  CSA /EN/IEC/UL 60079-11 Clauses 5.7 a and b. As such TRM-CC may be installed in hazardous areas when connected to the monitoring device via an approved zener safety barrier without adversely impacting the safety approvals associated with the zener barrier. The safety approvals granted to monitoring equipment and/or the zener barrier apply to the installation as a whole. TRM Sensors recommends MTL 7760ac zener barrier. One barrier is required per TRM-CC probe.

Reverse Sense Option:

  • Some legacy leak detection systems (e.g. TraceTek) require a normally open sensor that closes on alarm. A special version of TRM-CC with an “X” suffix is available. The TRM-CC-nnX variants uses embedded, micro-power circuit to emulate a normally open sensor. No external power is required.
