Transformer Oil (mineral oil), Lube Oil, Hydraulic Oil and Heat Transfer Oils are refined to remove all volatile components.   Sensors designed to be  used for hydrocarbon fuels respond very slowly, if at all.    TRM Sensors has developed a new approach that does not rely on the traditional silicone based chemistry used for fuel detection.

Industrial Oil Detection

TRM-IOS  (Industrial Oil Sensor) is a direct contact sensor using the same design elements as the popular TRM-DFS-3:  low center of gravity, low profile, sensor element held in direct contact with the floor surface or drip pan, completely passive “simple apparatus” suitable for installation in ordinary or hazardous areas.    The objective is to detect oil leaks before they cause equipment damage or find their way to floor drains.   In many instances oil filled equipment is located in vaults or mechanical rooms that are not continuously staffed.    “Out-of-sight; out of mind” is a real problem for equipment that is designed to operate maintenance free for extended periods.   When bushings age or seals weaken due to elevated temperature, vibration and stress, leaks happen.    The risk of over heating, excess wear, service interruptions or worse can be  mitigated with simple, effective detection of oil puddling on the floor or collecting in a drip pan.    Direct contact sensing is far more sensitive than a float switch and is not subject to a false alarm from water.    TRM-IOS is a discriminating sensor that reacts when a puddle of oil reaches the sensor.   Response time is measured in seconds and activation height is the depth of the puddle as it spreads across the floor or drip pan.
